Char Kuey Teow

Char Kuey Teow, food of the GODS! Okay, maybe not quite. But still pretty amazing.

Char Kuey Teow (Fried Flat Rice Noodles) is really something special and seriously delicious. Originally from Penang, Char Kuey Teow is one my favourite foods, I mean, you just can't get any better than a great plate of Char Kuey Teow. It's a humble dish, with big flavour. I've not attempted to make it yet, but I've found a great Penang Char Kuey Teow recipe on Rasa Malaysia, and it looks pretty authentic (so authentic, I was salivating on my computer...), and I think I will be giving it a go in the near future.

The ability to capture the 'wok hei' ('breath of the wok' - the smokey flavour you get from frying at a really high heat) is a skill that I'd like to learn. So we'll see how it goes :)

This was at dinner the other night - we ate at Chow Yang in SS2, Petaling Jaya.

It used to be pretty famous according to my mom, but lately the standard of it fluctuates depending on who cooks it. The owner of the stall only cooks occasionally now, he has employed other cooks to make the Char Kuey Teow when he needs a break I guess, and it's still nice, but not what it could be. The colour and texture of this Char Kuey Teow is just what it should be though, a little brown but not too dark or too light, and the noodles aren't soggy.

I'm feeling hungry just talking about it!

Anyway, if you have other Char Kuey Teow places or recipes to recommend, I'd love to try them out, let me know in the comments :)
